Summary
Tack is a local-first clipboard history utility for macOS. Tack does not require an account, and no server of ours ever receives your clipboard history — we operate no service that could store it. History is kept on your Mac, and goes nowhere else unless you switch on iCloud Sync, which uses your own Apple Account. The copy you download here makes two small daily requests, for licensing and update checks, described under Network access; they carry no clipboard content.
Clipboard content
When clipboard monitoring is active, Tack may save text and images that you copy so you can find and reuse them later. Saved history is stored locally in Tack’s application container on your Mac, and nowhere else unless you turn on iCloud Sync.
Tack ignores clipboard items that source applications identify as concealed, transient, or automatically generated. Tack also avoids recording content copied from excluded applications. You can manage exclusions, pause monitoring, choose a history limit, and clear saved history from within Tack.
iCloud Sync
iCloud Sync is off until you turn it on in Tack’s settings, and no update turns it on for you. When it is on, Tack copies your clipboard history into the private CloudKit database of your own Apple Account so that your Macs share one history. Apple stores it under your account; Tack has no server, receives none of it, and cannot read it.
Turning the setting off stops further uploads. Remove Synced History from iCloud deletes what Tack has already put there, without changing the history on your Mac. Deletions, Clear History, and starring apply on every Mac you have synced. If you sign in to a different Apple Account, or the synced data is removed from another device, Tack turns sync off on this Mac and explains why rather than re-uploading anything.
Information we collect
Tack does not intentionally collect or transmit clipboard history, analytics, advertising data, location data, or contacts, and the app contains no third-party analytics or advertising SDK. We operate no server and receive nothing from your Mac. The one identifier that leaves your Mac is the license key of a copy downloaded from this site, sent to Polar to confirm the subscription, as described under Network access.
Network access
Tack’s clipboard-history features work without network access, and Tack never uploads clipboard content to a Tack-operated server, because there is none. Tack opens a network connection in these cases, and none of them carries clipboard content:
- To iCloud, only while you have iCloud Sync switched on.
- In Mac App Store copies, to Apple’s StoreKit service, to load purchase options and verify a purchase.
- In copies downloaded from this site, to Polar, our payment provider, about once a day, to confirm that the license on your Mac is still active. The request carries your license key and the name you gave your Mac, which Polar shows you so you can recognise your own machines. Tack keeps working for two weeks between successful checks, so being offline does not lock you out.
- In copies downloaded from this site, to this site, about once a day, to read the version number of the current release so Tack can tell you an update exists.
The last two are made by the download from this site only; Mac App Store copies never make them. Polar and this site see the IP address that any web request shows.
Automatic Paste permission
If Automatic Paste is enabled, Tack requests macOS Post Event permission so it can send Command-V after you explicitly select a clipboard item. Tack does not use this permission to read, inspect, or control another application’s interface. Without permission, the selected item remains on the clipboard for manual paste.
Retention and deletion
Clipboard history remains on your Mac until removed by your history limit, cleared by you, or deleted when you remove Tack’s data. Clear History permanently removes the locally saved clipboard-history records managed by Tack, other than items you have starred, which have their own Clear Starred command. If iCloud Sync is on, anything you delete here is deleted from iCloud too, and Remove Synced History from iCloud clears the iCloud copy on its own.
Sharing and sale
Tack does not sell personal information or clipboard content and does not share clipboard history with third parties. Copies downloaded from this site send a license key and your Mac’s name to Polar, our payment provider, to check the subscription; Polar handles that under its own privacy policy. No clipboard content is ever included.
Security
Tack uses protections provided by macOS, including App Sandbox. No software can guarantee absolute security. Avoid retaining sensitive clipboard content longer than necessary and use Tack’s pause, exclusion, and clear-history controls when appropriate.
Children’s privacy
Tack is not directed specifically to children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when Tack’s features or legal obligations change. The revised policy and effective date will be published on this page.
